A Burnt Out Fuse-box.
We left Lazise and drove through to Venice. Bernard and I planned to stay at the Lido di Jesolo with Lara for about five days and then drive her to Bassano di Grappa, which is north of Venice, where she was setting up a photographic project; ”Boxing Bassano”.
As we approached the Venice area, Lara and I could smell burning. We sniffed and sniffed, yes definitely burning. On arriving at the Miramare campsite at Punto Sabbioni, in the district of Cavalino, on the Lido di Jesolo, and parking, we discovered the fridge had blown once again, but this time the electrics were not working either. The campsite manager told us of a large camping accessory and repair shop not too far away, which we had in fact passed and had noted it’s position.
Camping Miramare Is A Good Site For Venice.
The next morning Lara took the ferry into Venice whilst Bernard and I drove to the camping shop. They arranged for a rental fridge freezer to be delivered to the site in the afternoon with the mechanic who would inspect our one.
Promptly he arrived with a decent sized machine which we installed outside. However on inspecting our fuse-box, he informed us that the whole box was burnt through and we were lucky not to have been set on fire. He would have to order a new fuse-box, which would take a few days to arrive.
We had no internal 12 volt electricity, but were plugged in from outside. The lights work on the 12 volt from the fuse-box and we did not have a plug in reading lamp with us, so it was fun and games at night with our torches. Also the water heating, although from a gas boiler, is sparked by electricity and the toilet flushes by another electric fuse. We made good use of the shower and toilet facilities of the campsite.
The few days dragged on, as firstly there was a postal strike, then a bus strike, then a ferry strike and then a national festival. In the end it took eleven days before the new fuse box was installed and we could be on our way. It was quite a costly repair in the end as we also had to pay for eleven days rental.
Thank goodness we were on a decent site, within walking distance of the ferries, but also with a free shuttle bus during the day to the ferry port, and that the camping accessory place was nearby and very accommodating.
Lara left us after five days and was met at Venice by a taxi to take her to Bassano as it was the train strike day!
Camping Miramare is an excellent site for visiting Venice and the Islands and we made good use of our time there.
