Taking advantage of our travel passes we took the ferry from Punto Sabbioni to Burano; a very pretty small island with colourful houses and a very busy main square. Yes, it is a tourist island with gift shops everywhere selling lace items supposedly made on the island and glass items made on the nearby Murano Island.
Restaurants and cafes are tourist prices, so bring your own picnic which we did not! But we did enjoy meandering around.
There is a bridge, one of many of course, that leads to another even smaller island, Isola Mazzorba. This island is mainly a medieval vegetable garden still in use, very peaceful after the hustle and bustle of Burano. Wandering through we noticed that there was a rather upmarket restaurant and hotel at the far side and being time for tea we decided to splash out on a comfortable and luxurious tea.
It was pretty busy with families finishing their extended lunches. We sat ourselves at a table only to be told that they do not do teas just main meals but we would on this occasion be served a tea. We paid top price but service and ambience is everything and the Venissa Ristorante had it. The cloakrooms in the hotel complex were superb and futuristic. A rather pleasant peaceful break before meeting Lara and on to another island.
We met Lara as she came off the Venice ferry and hopped on the ferry to Torcello a northern island on the lagoon. In medieval times it was thriving, but now it is virtually a relic. We took a long walk to the ancient church where there was great excitement as a wedding was taking place. It is a popular place for weddings and christenings.
Then it was back to Burano and another ferry back to Punto Sabbioni and the campsite.
