Verona

Romeo, Wherefore Art Thou in Verona?

We had arranged to meet Lara at Verona station in Northern Italy and as she had luggage and a heavy camera bag, we took the motorhome and parked it at the designated parking spot for motorhomes, not far from the station.

Having met her and returned to the parking lot, I made lunch, and then we set off once again into town. First stop the Arena, but as the Opera season had not yet started, there wasn’t the spectacle of the gigantic scenery, which, when we last visited the city, was stored all around the outside of the Arena’s walls. This in itself was worth the visit let alone the amazing Opera performance.

Naturally, Lara wanted to visit Juliette’s house, which of course really does not exist as it is only a story after all! We joined the masses all making their way to paint graffiti on the walls or post a note into a crack in the brick work of the supposed house.

Thousands of Japanese girls giggling away and taking endless photographs slowed us down, giving us time to take in the architecture around us, although we could only see over their heads to the upper stories.

We were jostled into the courtyard by the crowds and gazed up at “The Balcony”. Girls had paid to traipse upstairs so that they could call down to their “Romeos”. That is what tourism is all about; grab the money if you have a good story.

We then became very lost on our return to the parking and ended up having to pay for a whole day, having overstayed the cheaper time limit. It was then back to Lazise, where we made up Lara’s bed and settled down for the night.

We had “done” Verona!
